At 12.20am, he was asleep in a room behind his shop when a noise woke him up.
After he switched on his light for the second time, he saw four men in his room.
Captain Johannes Ramphora, spokesman for the Springs police, says two of the men were armed with guns, while another had a knife and one was unarmed.
The two with guns pointed it at the shop owner and demanded money.
The unarmed robber allegedly armed himself with a hammer he found on the floor. Ramphora says the victim showed the robbers the money he was hiding in a duvet cover, but it allegedly wasn’t enough for the robbers.
While three of them searched the room, the robber with the knife, tried to stab the victim, but he blocked the attack with his right arm and was stabbed in the arm.
The other robbers couldn’t find more cash and allegedly tied the victim’s hands and feet with cable ties.
They took him to the graveyard next to his shop and let him lean over a tombstone.
It is believed they threatened to kill him if he did not give them more money.
Ramphora says one of the robbers sprayed pepper spray in the victim’s eyes and mouth.
The victim could barely see, but allegedly managed to untie himself at this point and ran towards his shop.
According to Ramphora the victim claims he heard two shots but was not hurt.
The robbers took money, his iPad and two cell phones.
