Ambulance’s crash with patient inside
Last Thursday an ambulance crashed while on its way to the Far East Rand Hospital (FERH) with a patient inside.
The accident took place at 10am, when a bakkie, skipping a red traffic light, caused a three-vehicle accident involving two ambulances.
A section of Hospital Road and Paul Kruger Highway was closed for almost 45 minutes.
One ambulance was allegedly standing at a red traffic light at the intersection when another ambulance, travelling on Paul Kruger Highway, approached the intersection.
According to the driver of the ambulance the siren and emergency red lights were on at the time.
It is believed the ambulance slowed down to turn at the intersection, when a bakkie skipped the red light, hitting the ambulance, causing it so slide and hit the ambulance which was standing still.
EMPD officer Louis Els says the driver of the bakkie believed the traffic light had turned green for him and claims he did not hear the siren or see the oncoming ambulance.
Officer Louwrens du Toit says the patient in the ambulance did not sustain any further injuries and was transferred to another ambulance and taken to the FERH.
The crew of the ambulance sustained minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.
The personnel of the other ambulance and the driver of the bakkie sustained no injuries.
After 45 minutes, the scene was cleared by emergency personnel.
The accident will be investigated.
