Littered alley cause rats to swarm

Business owners and residents are disgusted by the sight of an alleyway in Fifth Avenue, Springs CBD.

Leona Bisello, caretaker at Molendam, walked past the business on the corner of Fifth Avenue and Seventh Street on Tuesday and could not believe the sight that greeted her when she saw clean water flowing from the alley and was even more disgusted when she saw the filth spread through the entire alley.

She went to the business owner to inform him of the situation and was told by him that they have been trying to get the problem sorted for more than three months.

The business owner, who wishes not to be named, says that the dumping has become so bad that rats have not only infested the alley, but their business premises as well.

“We have even had a health inspector from the Department of Health on our premises to make them aware of how the matter has deteriorated,” he says.

He adds that the matter has gotten worse to the point where a water pipe has burst and is leaking down the pavement, but that it is still not tended to.

“I don’t know whose responsibility the alley is, but it needs to be sorted out.”

An employee of the business explains that when they asked for a reference number when they reported the matter, they were told it was not necessary and that the problem will be dealt with.

Bisello says, “This is a health hazard and they are wasting perfectly clean water.”

The Addie is awaiting comment from Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.
