Nigerian community gives thanks
The Nigerian community gave thanks to God by celebrating a Harvest Festival.
Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church hosted their annual Harvest Festival as part of the Nigerian community’s Thanksgiving on Sunday.
“The day is about thanking God for all the good, as well as the bad, things that have happened during the year,” says church committee member, Maria Helena. Traditionally in Nigeria, the community brings whatever they have raised or grown that year, or anything they have in their houses, to show their appreciation and gratitude towards God.

The community brought mounds of non-perishable foods and household products which were auctioned off at above market value prices, while others chose to donate an envelope containing cash or a cheque.
“All proceeds will go towards maintenance of the church as well as the weekly feeding scheme, but we are here to give thanks to God for every year that we’re alive,” says church financial chairman, Ben Iwu-Okoye.

Portuguese chicken with rolls and green salad, as well as prego rolls were on sale, in additional to chocolate cake and popcorn.
This year marked the fifth Harvest Festival, which has in the past raised up to R40 000 for the church, says Ben.
“It is a wonderful event because the community gets to give their thanks, while the church also benefits from it,” Maria says.
