Resident not happy with SPCA’s response to cats

Paul Krugersoord resident Jackie van Staden considers stray cats in Potgieter Street a problem and claims more cats have recently been attracted to the area by a pensioner who feeds them.

“I cannot prove that the woman is feeding the cats, but I have noticed most of the cats visit her house late in the afternoon,” she says.

Another concern, she says, is that the cats often fight and seriously injure each other during these violent clashes.

When van Staden contacted the Springs SPCA for assistance she didn’t get the response she was hoping for but instead, she claims, was told to rent a cat trap and catch the cats herself.

“To think they expect me to catch these stray cats,” she says.

Van Staden claims the SPCA is ignoring the matter rather than addressing it.

Jenny Halvatzis, vice chairman of the Springs SPCA, says the pensioner concerned has sterilised and vaccinated several of the cats living with her.

They have offered a cat trap to van Staden which she can rent to try and catch the unwanted cats.

“We have done everything correctly and are working with the pensioner concerned on an ongoing basis.

“The matter has not been ignored, as claimed by the complainant,” says Halvatzis.
