Motorists don’t care about one-way times near schools
One-way traffic signs outside schools are ignored by drivers who are inconsiderate towards those dropping off their children, according to Yvonne Kruger.

She drops her child off opposite Springs Girls’ High School each day and navigates Charterland Road twice a day.
“The sign advises between school pick-up hours the street is to be treated as a one-way,” Yvonne says.
She claims she has nearly been involved in an accident twice since the beginning of the year due to another driver ignoring the one-way sign.
Kruger says congestion occurs during drop-off and pick-up hours and having a one-way street between those times has advantages in reducing congestion, but motorists ignore the sign.
“I know parents have complained to most, if not all, of the schools in the area just to be told there is nothing the schools can do.
The schools allegedly claim it is the domain of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) to ensure motorists obey road signs.
Yvonne claims to have seen EMPD officers in the area about three times since school re-opened in January.
“I realise they cannot patrol the area every day as they probably don’t have the manpower for this,” she says.
“However, the signs should be made bigger and then there should be no excuse, especially for ignorance.
“We should name and shame a few drivers by spending a day taking photos of these hooligans, and also coax the EMPD to make more random stops in the street,” she says.
EMPD spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago says one-way signs are specifically for the convenience of the parents and other motorists dropping off their children at particular times.
He says those disobeying these road signs will be brought to book.
“The schools will be periodically visited to ensure smooth sailing as far as traffic is concerned, as well as seeing to safety for all,” says Kgasago.
