Thieves target commuters at Pollak Park railway crossing

Dilapidated chain-link fence at Pollak Park train station raises eyebrow to commuter.

A train commuter, Ibram Ngoato says the chain-link fence at the Pollak Park Train Station has been left unattended for a long time.

“It’s been years that the fence has been vandalised and our government is not doing anything to erect a new fence at the station,” says Ngoato.

The station has a chain-link fence, however, it ends at the section obscured by trees and bushes which are ultimately not enough to prevent collisions and fatalities at the crossing.

Ngoato’s concern is that besides people working around the area there are college students who cross the railway tracks daily.

“This situation is a major hazard for all of us affected because this is our everyday route.”

Ngoato also says the railway station not having a fence gives access to criminals as they use it for an escape route.

“People are mugged every morning and evening by thieves who hide under the small bridge.”

As trains pull into the station, people inevitably rush across the tracks, and sometimes, unknown to them a train might be traveling at high speed.

He says commuters also need to be cautious although the municipality can help the situation by putting an overpass for them to use.
