Woman who allegedly kidnaps daughter appears in court

A woman accused of kidnapping her own child will be back in court on October 5.

A Springs woman, who allegedly kidnapped her daughter, briefly appeared in the Springs Regional Court on Friday.

The case was postponed to October 5.

She is facing charges of kidnapping, theft of a motor vehicle and child abandonment.

On August 28, members of the Hi5Kids Recovery Unit task team, investigating officer W/O Tracey Wentzel and other role players, went to Reiger Park where they found the woman and her six-year-old daughter in a house.

“The child was placed at a place of safety and the woman was arrested and taken to the Springs police cells,” says Barries Barnard from Hi5Kids.

The 36-year-old woman’s first court appearance was on August 31.

Barnard says the case was postponed twice and bail was denied.

The accused kidnapped her own child as well as a two-year-old boy from a place of safety in Springs and took a Datsum 1200 bakkie.

Without any trace of the woman, the boy was found abandoned in a hotel room in Hillbrow and was reunited with his mother.

Barnard says when they received information they immediately reacted.

The woman will remain in custody in the Johannesburg Female Correctional Centre.
