Percy Mthembu, a resident in Daggafontein, says sewage leaks have been giving them endless problems since he and his family moved to the area.
Mthembu says the sewage flows from a manhole on Pikkenwyn Street onto an open field with the stench accompanying the flow to the houses close by.
“When we moved in, the situation was already like that. There seems to be a problem with the drainage,” says Mthembu.
Upon probing into the sewage matter with his neighbour, Mthembu was told the sewage leak had been reported previously and nothing seemed to have been done about it.
“People from the municipality came and checked the drains in our yards. They tried to fix what needed to be fixed on the vacant land but only for the problem to start again a week later,” says Mthembu.
“My drain is not giving me issues but what troubles me is the manhole, that is constantly open, near my house on the vacant land.”
Mthembu says metro workers, who claimed they were from Boksburg, were more interested in fixing a drain believed to be for a house that would be built on the vacant land.
“On Wednesday, they began fitting a new pipe just across my house but they said nothing about the overflowing manhole we’ve been trying to get them to fix.”
Mthembu’s concern is that with summer approaching his house will be infested by flies and unwanted insects because of the sewage.
Mthembu adds the miners around the area usually use the water from the vacant land which he feels is very hazardous.
“We need someone to commit to clearing the pipe for us as we have been reporting this situation for a long time now.”
At the time of going to print, the metro had not offered comment.
