Children from Sithandizingane were invited to an environmental education programme at Bleskopspruit Wetland Reserve

Environmental program educates children on environment.

Mojalefa Mnguni from City Of Ekurhuleni Department of Environmental Resources Management says it is crucial to teach the children about the environment at this age.

Malebo Ditlokwe pays careful attention as she tries to identify some of the birds at the Blesbokspruit Wetland Reserve.

“One of the main reasons the environment is neglected is because most people don’t understand how it benefits us.

“We need to understand how everything works together in the ecosystem.”

The Blesbokspruit is said to be one of the largest wetlands in the highveld region of Southern Africa.

The wetland has also become conservation priority as it forms an important component of Ekurhuleni Tourism.

“It is sad that although the wetland is intentionally recognised, the people who live around it do not recognise its value,” adds Mnguni.

A group of children form Sithitandizingane visited Blesbokspruit Wetland Reserve to be educated about taking the environment, and its importance in our daily lives.

The children, between six and 13 years old, were educated about all the different species that have their homes at Blesbokspruit.

“I believe our country has a shortage of environmentalists, so I hope that some of these children will find viable careers in this field.

“I hope that this excursion spikes their interest in all things environmental.”
