Farmers invited to meet with Gauteng Legislature

“We want to contribute to food security in the province, but we also want to create jobs and alleviate poverty. “We need the legislature to come and hear our concerns,” says Mpye.

The Ekurhuleni Farming Development Association is calling on everyone involved in the agricultural sector to join them in meeting with the Gauteng Legislature on Thursday.

The meeting will be to discuss the challenges emerging and established farmers face.

“For example, for our farmers in KwaThema, they have a problem finding grazing land for their cows and end up violating municipal by-laws.

“The same goes for those who are breeding chickens.

“People don’t have land to breed or to plough,” says Peter Mpye, the chairperson of the Ekurhuleni Farming Development Association.

Mpye says these farmers don’t get the support they need, like input on production or training.

“We need the legislature to come and hear our concerns,” says Mpye.

The meeting will include people from Ekurhuleni East.

In Springs, the pickup point will be the civic centre.
