Susan Strydom (66) was turned away on March 19 from Sassa in Springs by one of the consultants when she went there to apply for an old age grant.

Strydom says she was asked where she was all along as she is only coming now to apply and also says the consultant told her to “suka” which basically means “get lost”.

Khanyisile Ntengo, the branch manager, says: “The behaviour is unacceptable.

“Consultants are taken through training.

“The conduct of the consultant is unacceptable and measures will be taken to deal with the situation.”

“The consultant and the supervisor were rude and the consultant was also dismissive.

“The consultant only checked my ID book and no other documents were checked.

“I worked until I was 62 and had my pension to carry me through over the years that is why I didn’t apply all this time,” says Strydom.

Ntengo asked Strydom to go to the offices on March 25 to meet the supervisor.

Strydom and her sister, Mariette Jennings, arrived at the offices at 7am and was only attended to at 8.30am.

Ntengo had promised that Strydom will be attended to by the supervisor, however, the supervisor referred her to a consultant who Strydom also felt was being rude.

Jennings says: “My sister was not given any list of the requirements. The manager only told us over the phone what to bring to the offices. Susan has lost everything including her house and car and has now moved in with me, that is why she now needs the grant and she also needs to take care of her grandson.”

Strydom was turned away again and was given a list of the things to bring upon her next visit to the offices.
