The Springs Advertiser recently published an article about ongoing sewage issues in Struisbult, with residents expressing their frustration about the sewage, which poses a health risk.

The affected areas include Malgas and Patrys streets, among others.

City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini explained that the cause of the ongoing sewage and pump stations issue is continuous blockages.

“Faulty pump due to continuous blockages as the result of the foreign objects – abuse of the sewer system by people throwing foreign objects such as nappies, rugs, blankets, etcetera, into the sewer system.

“Furthermore, there was vandalism where cables were stolen and burst rising main,” Dlamini said.

He added that the municipality has been aware of the sewage problems in Struisbult since June.

“Since June 11 the city has been doing level control with the vacuum truck while the pump was being repaired,” he said.

Dlamini said the pump is repaired and ready to be installed.

“However the vacuum truck cannot access the pump station to conduct sump cleaning before the pump is installed due to muddy ground after the recent rainfall. We are devising means to access the station,” he said.

He also said the city plans to conduct the necessary repairs on the pump station and rising main, and get the station operational before the end of this week.
