Stray cow struck on Rietfontein Road

The complainant says roaming cattle often cross the streets without a shepherd or owner in sight.

A cow was struck by a bakkie on Rietfontein Road between Tonk Meter and Vlakfontein roads on Tuesday morning.

A complainant stated the Selpark CPF reported the incident to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD).

The complainant says roaming cattle often cross the streets without a shepherd or owner in sight.

According to the driver, the cattle were crossing the street without a shepherd to guide them.

According to the EMPD media liaison officer, Kobeli Mokheseng, the officer on site left the scene at 8.30am and no one had come to claim the badly injured cow.

The EMPD stated their by-laws indicate if an animal, which is your property or under your control, is let loose or left to wander the fine is R200.

The EMPD also says they receive complaints at least once a week about livestock grazing or crossing Tonk Meter Road with hardly a shepherd in sight; most of the reported incidents occur on Tonk Meter Road and the EMPD have engaged with the SPCA on this matter.

The 48-year-old male driver was not injured.

A request for comment has been sent to the SPCA.
