Sector Four meeting in Bakerton

According to Sector Four chairperson Mike Masilele, they have issued pamphlets warning people about the danger, but the incidents have not decreased and people have not taken extra precautions.

The Sector Four community met with the leadership of the Springs police, CPF and sector on Wednesday evening to discuss issues affecting the community.

Sector Four includes Bakerton, Gugulethu, Slovo Park, Payneville and Jacob’s Farm.

The main problems facing the sector are the smash-and-grabs at the Bakerton intersection and the surge in crime on the N12 exit.

According to Sector Four chairperson Mike Masilele, they have issued pamphlets warning people about the danger, but the incidents have not decreased and people have not taken extra precautions.

“For example, passengers must stop asking to get off the taxis on the N12.

“We have spoken to the Long Distance Taxi Association and they have assured us drivers are not allowed to pick up or drop off passengers anywhere but at the taxi rank,” says Masilele.

Masilele urged the community to get more involved in fighting crime.

“As a whole, Sector Four must meet and we should pull up our sleeve.

“Crime affects everyone, not just the residents,” says Masilele.

Speaking on behalf of the police, Springs police station commander Brig Thembeka Gwebushe urged residents to report crime.

“The SAPS patrols based on the crimes reported.

“When you don’t report crime, it gives the impression that Bakerton is safe,” says Gwebushe.

Gwebushe added domestic violence in Bakerton, housebreaking and theft, especially in Welgedacht, remained a problem for the police in the area.

Springs CPF chairperson Barend van Heerden said if residents were to scared to report crimes, they must use the envelope method.

“Write the problem down and put it in a sealed envelope and give it to Ahem Choughly, Bakerton CPF chairperson, or Masilele, who will pass it on to Capt Sabata Shasha, who will investigate.

“No names will be mentioned as to who reported the crime,” says van Heerden.

In the Q&A session afterwards, the residents complained about the lack of SAPS and EMPD visibility and the lack of feedback on murders that have occurred in Bakerton.

Police said they do have a presence in Bakerton, but their cars are not marked and would work on providing feedback to the community.

Sector Four numbers to call if you need the police are 071 675 7004 or 071 675 7005.

If there is no response call, 10111 or the police station on 011 365 5700 or 011 365 5719 or 011 365 5720.
