Celebrating Nelson Mandela by cleaning

Labuschagne says she wishes that the metro can source out funds to revamp the park so that it can go back to how it used to be in the old days.

The Boston City Campus and Business College Springs cleaned up Windmill Park on Thursday as part of their 67 Minutes for Mandela Day.

Ria Labuschagne, branch manager of the campus, says: “Us cleaning today is a Boston initiative; it’s not just a branch initiative.

“It’s happening at over 40 branches and we decided that we are going to combine the #Trash with the 67 Minutes for Mandela.

“All our branches are committed to cleaning an area close to where they are, as we are all for a clean environment.

“We need to take care of the environment because at the end of the day, it’s all we have and it’s not going to get better unless we make it better.

“We chose Windmill Park because it is walking distance from the campus.

“This is an old park and it used to be beautiful.

“It hurts to see what has become of it.”

Labuschagne says she wishes that the metro can source out funds to revamp the park so that it can go back to how it used to be in the old days.

A student at the college, Sibusiso Methula, says: “Nelson Mandela did a lot for us, not only as South Africans, but for the whole world.

“When we celebrate the 67 minutes, we are not doing it for him, but for ourselves.”

Methula says he thinks that people are lazy and he wishes that projects such as cleaning up, painting and giving back to the community could be done more often.

“I am doing my part today because I think that Springs used to be a great town, but it’s now a dirty town.

“It doesn’t need cleaning, it needs renovating,” says Methula.
