Olympia Park School gives back to the community by cleaning

The learners and teachers cleaned the pathway across the road from the school leading up to the stadium, the stadium and a park opposite the stadium.

The Olympia Park School celebrated their 67 minutes of Mandela Day on Thursday by cleaning the PAM Brink stadium and surrounding areas.

Mandela Day is an international call to action that celebrates the idea that everyone has the power to transform the world and the ability to make an impact.

In 2009, the United Nations General Assembly formally declared July 18 as Nelson Mandela International Day.

An IsiZulu teacher at the school who organised the cleaning campaign, Hlaleleni Khoza says: “We have decided to clean the stadium as we use it for our sports games, so it affects us when it’s dirty and it makes the environment unhealthy for us.

“What we’ll be doing today is that we are going to divide the learners into groups of five of various classes and they’ll be cleaning in those groups.

“We saw it relevant to celebrate the 67 minutes in giving back to the community and also this opportunity to prepare and clean-up for our cross-country, which will be sometime in August.”

A learner at the school, Jakobus Rudolph, says: “It is better to keep the streets clean and not make it messy.

“I’m happy to celebrate my 67 minutes by cleaning.”
