Share a Box donates menstrual products and female condoms

With the NGO up and running in 2018, Mthombeni says he wants to empower women to take control of their sexual health.

Share a Box, a non-profit organisation (NGO), wants to help women to look after their sexual health and have access to menstrual products.

The idea for the NGO started in late 2017 after a guy gave founder Nkosinathi Mthombeni a box of condoms.

“He just threw them at me at and told me to protect myself as it is the festive season, and things tend to get out of hand

“It got me thinking about how great it would be if I could do something similar for women in Springs where we can share a box of sanitary products.”

The centre can provide an emergency pack of sanitary products should women suddenly find themselves without.

Mthombeni says although the pad donation drive he had done with friends in Boksburg was a great thing, it was a temporary fix to an ongoing problem, and sanitary products are expensive and women need them every month.

“It’s not just sanitary products that we collect, we also collect adult nappies for the women in the old age homes,” says Mthombeni.

With the NGO up and running since 2018, Mthombeni says he wants to empower women to take control of their reproductive health.

“Alongside the menstrual products, we also have female and male condoms available here.

“We’re not advertising sex, our aim is to become a healthcare wellness centre where people have access to information about their health and products,” says Mthombeni.

Since the NGO opened two months ago, they have seen an influx of people, especially younger women.

“At the moment, a lot of what we do is limited by what we can afford to raise ourselves, and what has been donated to us.

“It’s still early days so as we grow, we will partner with other organisations to offer more well-rounded services and have places we can refer our clients to should they need help we can’t provide,” says Mthombeni.

The centre operates from Monday to Thursday from 9am to 4pm and can be found at The Avenues Shopping Centre.
