Sundra residents left with virtually no water

This is a result of the Victor Khanye Local Municipality reportedly owing Rand Water over R100 million.

Residents and businesses in Sundra have been struggling to get a steady supply of water over the past six months.

This is a result of the Victor Khanye Local Municipality allegedly owing Rand Water over R100 million.

The municipality includes areas such as Sundra, Delmas, Botleng, Rietkol and Eloff.

As a result of non-payment by the municipality, the water supplier has reduced the water pressure by over 40 per cent in the area.

Residents say they have had to rely on water donations to survive and have struggled with basic household tasks while farmers struggled with their crops and animals.

Those in high laying areas have not been able to get any water at all. Concerned citizen Werner Bates described the lack of water as a problem that has gotten out of control and says the community and businesses in Sundra are suffering tremendously.

“The children and elderly find themselves in unhygienic situations that could be a health risk.

“There is a fire risk, with no water to extinguish any fires before spreading.

“Several businesses are affected and some have had to close their doors.

“The biggest concern is the fact that there could be an outbreak of health issues in Sundra,” says Bates.

As of last Thursday, it appeared as though Sundra’s water woes will continue for some time.

Rand Water announced the municipality had missed its October 1 deadline for payment and would, therefore, decrease water pressure to the municipality.

Attempts to get a comment from the municipality were not successful.
