Motherkind spoils mothers at Far East Rand Hospital

Mothers and babies at Far East Rand Hospital (FERH) were spoiled with gifts from Muslim Hands on Monday morning.

“The worst story we have heard is of a mother wrapping her newborn baby in newspaper as she left a hospital.
“Things like that should never happen, especially where we can help,” says Sheikh Haasim Peck, the programme’s co-ordinator.
He says they are aware that the hospital serves a community where most people do not have much.

“There are so many informal settlements around the hospital and we know they need the most basic things.
“Our objective is to serve the needy, beyond racial and religious barriers,” he adds.
The 200 hampers were filled with baby toiletries, nappies and some clothing items.
The Cape Town-based charity also helps mothers with medical and surgical needs.
Area manager Matron Tshikiwani Mathibe thanked the group, saying: “I hope from now the partnership will continue.

The hospital says they have had many cases where a women gives birth and has nothing for her newborn baby.
They believe these gifts will go a long way.
“The major problem is that some of them do not even have any support where they come from.
“They know the situation will not get better when they get home,” says Peck.
