No answer for Presidentia residents

More than 17 lots are unoccupied, with many people left on a massive waiting list.

The Presidentia old age home in Geduld is still being neglected and residents are becoming frustrated.

Residents of Presidentia have had maintenance issues since 2014.

The motor of one of the main gates is broken, so the gate is left open during the day and is only locked at night.

More than 17 lots are unoccupied, with many people left on a massive waiting list.

People on the waiting list have not received any updates on the situation and many have been waiting for years.

Ward councillor Dean Stone says: “ I have spoken to the Department of Housing and things are really a mess.

“In order for anything to be fixed here, a request first has to be sent to the housing department in Benoni, who then sends a tender to Germiston, but then nothing happens and nobody gets any information.”

According to Stone, Presidentia’s caretaker is not allowed to fix anything and is only allowed to report the problems, which leads to a dead end.

In addition, the caretaker is not only responsible for Presidentia, but all the other housing projects in Springs, which include Molendam, Toekoms and Awengloed.

He also has no tools with which to fix any problems.

It is also alleged that the caretaker does not have his own means of transport.

Stone says: “That is really what makes this whole thing ridiculous.

“If someone is in charge of so many housing projects, how is he not given a car?

“It is impossible for him to do his job.”

Presidentia suffers from many other problems, such as broken geysers, sewage leakages, blocked toilets and regular break-ins, and very little is being done.

Residents feel neglected and unsafe, especially with the gate being left open during the day.

The metro has failed to respond at time of publication.
