Indoor sports centre neglected

What was once a great venue used by many clubs is now a home for rats and other insects.

The indoor sports centre on the corner of Dorset and South Main Reef Road is falling apart.

What was once a great venue used by many clubs is now a home for rats and other insects.

There appears to be bats in the roof and parts of the building leak.

The centre lies abandoned with this main hall reeking of rat urine, litter and bats living in the roof.

There is no electricity in the building and the bathrooms are flooded.

What is apparent is that the centre has not been used in a very long time.

The only good thing is the 24-hour security on site.

As recently as three years ago, the venue used to host cricket, netball and MMA tournaments.

Why that stopped is not clear.

Additionally, the metro does not appear to have a plan for the venue.

Dean Stone, who sits on the metro’s sports, heritage, recreation, arts and culture oversight committee says he is unaware of any plans regarding the centre, or why the metro stopped making it available to hire, but would find out.

The upstairs part of the centre is the most badly affected by the leaks, with the whole area smelling damp. The floorboards are weak and could collapse at any time.

However, as bad as the centre appears to be, all is not lost.

Most of the furniture and fittings are intact, and a little renovation and clean-up would have the centre looking usable again.

There are many clubs in Springs that would benefit from a venue that is central, undercover, has security and is big.

Outside the centre, the grass has not been cut in a long time and the area around it looks untidy and unkempt.

The hall next to the centre was last used in 2018 for the launch of The African Transformation Movement party.

When The Addie was on the scene, the hall was locked and we were unable to inspect the condition of the hall inside.

The metro failed to respond in time for publication to our questions regarding the state of the centre and any future plans.
