Springs calm on Sassa payday
Springs Police spokesperson Capt Johannes Ramphora says Springsites in general have been complying with the rules of the lockdown.
The majority of the CBD was quiet as most of the shops in town were closed.
It was also quite cleaner, with less litter flying around.
The taxi rank is also not a busy.
Queues could be found outside all the major food stores and at the banks and ATMs.
However, residents were still not observing the social distancing rules when queuing.
Many wore face masks and gloves to try and protect themselves against Covid-19.
Monday and Tuesday was payday for many Sassa recipients, and many reported they had no trouble getting their money.
Pensioner Dikotsi Sehlako says he ventured out to get food after he got his money.
“I came to buy nappies for my babies,” says Ntswaki Motloung.

Fresh produce manager at the Pick n Pay in Springs Mall Reuben Nhlapo says so far they have had no problems and are only letting in a few customers into the store at a time.
“We have stock arriving, so there’s no need to panic-buy.
“Each customer is only allowed to buy six of each item.
“Until lockdown is over, we will have a pensioner’s shopping hour from 7am until 8am on Wednesdays,” says Nhlapo.
Springs Police spokesperson Capt Johannes Ramphora says Springsites in general have been complying with the rules of the lockdown.
“This week, the operating hours for taxis have been extended to accommodate SASSA recipients.
“Since the shutdown started, over 20 people have been arrested, but overall people have been indoors.”
Ramphora noted that the only concerning issue for them has been the homeless people who hide when police are patrolling only to emerge afterwards.
They were spotted by The Addie on Wit Road outside the Springs Mall, taxi rank, by the shops on Nigel Road and wandering around the CBD.
