Learners give their view on Covid-19

Learners say they miss attending school.

Kwatsaduza – Six-year-old Sanele Mokoena, a Grade One learner, says he misses attending school.

“I want to go back to school now; staying at home and not seeing nor playing with my friends is tiring and boring.

“At school I get to learn with my friends and my teacher is there to help us if we do not understand something,” explains Sanele.

He says what he understands about Covid-19 is: “My mom told me it is a bad virus which has the ability to kill people, which is why people are forced to stay indoors and not visit other people.

“We have to constantly disinfect our surfaces, wash our hands and visit our doctors or go to the clinic if you have a fever or not feeling well.”

Khanyisile Mahlangu (9) is utilising the opportunity to catch up on some reading.

“At first staying at home was hard, but I am slowly getting used to it.

“Having my family with me makes this process much better because we play games together, and my mom and dad take turns tutoring me.

“I have been reading a lot of different books with the help of my family, watching television and do story-telling with my family,” says Khanyisile.

She explains that being home-schooled is not the same as being in class.

“Being home-schooled requires discipline and whoever is teaching you must be patient with you.

“It is not as fun as being at school, sometimes there are just too many distractions and so forth.

“I cannot wait to go back to school,” she adds.
