Police to partner up with NGOs

Police to work with NGOs to tackle gender-based violence

Research by Springs police has revealed the leading causes of gender-based violence in Springs.

Springs police spokesperson Cpt Johannes Ramphora says gender-based violence is mainly driven by societal and economic problems.

“What we have found is that most of those who are perpetrators were either bullied at school, are going through a divorce, were sexually abused themselves and exhibit discriminatory behaviour, especially towards the LGBTI community.

“We have also seen more instances of gender-based violence in cases where a partner depends on the other for financial support,” says Ramphora.

Ramphora says as police, they have decided to partner up with the Department of Social Development, churches and NGOs.

“As police, we have decided to take a three-pronged approach.

“The first of these will be a legislative approach where we encourage victims to report cases of GBV.

“From a social crime-prevention point of view, we need to raise awareness about this problem we have in our society, and we encourage neighbours to report incidents of GBV on behalf of the victim.

“The third approach is more corrective and includes counselling,” says Ramphora.

The police say they take GBV seriously and say they will respond at all hours.

“If you can’t get to the police station, you can go to the hospital and they will call us on your behalf and we will come to you.

“When you open a case with the police, make sure the doctor fills in your J88 so your injuries can be documented.

“If, for whatever reason, you come to the station and an officer refuses to help you, take their name down and you can report them to either myself, Col Eric Mhlongo and the station commander, Brig Thembeka Gwebushe,” says Ramphora.

The Springs police can be contacted on 011 365 5720 or 011 365 5700 24 hours a day.
