Residents worried about vagrants

Vagrants a cause for great concern

Residents are concerned about vagrants squatting on the island between Geduld and Paul Kruger roads.

According to residents, vagrants started gathering in the area at the beginning of the year, and their numbers have grown since.

An informal shelter has been erected and rubbish is littered all over the island.

Pinegrove Primary school is located on this road and teachers and parents are concerned for the safety of their children.

The school’s staff has been told to clean the litter on a number of occasions.

They also believe the vagrants are making the area unhygienic.

PR councillor Lorna Beharie says: “Since early May, there has been a steady influx of vagrants to the property, who have begun to erect permanent shelters and tents.

“I have been reliably informed by concerned members of the community that this matter has been reported to the SAPS and the EMPD, which saw the vagrants being removed.

“However, this has not been a permanent resolution, as the vagrants have moved back, once again.”

Beharie adds: “There is no running water or ablution facilities available on site.

“The vagrants have also begun to plead and solicit for food donations from parents when they are dropping their children off at school.

“As the Covid-19 pandemic begins to grip the province, this is extremely concerning.

“Urgent intervention herein is required.”
