Residents at Molendam Retirement Home are still faced with issues such as broken geysers, blocked toilets and a lack of outside lighting. The senior citizens have experienced these problems since 2017 and are frustrated with the municipality’s lack of communication. According to resident Patryc Nieman, five flats have broken geysers and residents are forced to collect hot water.

In addition, the geysers are leaking, which has caused water damage to the ceilings. Water is also leaking outside, posing a danger to the elderly residents. “We have people here with hip and knee problems and if they fall they can hurt themselves badly,” said Nieman. Another major concern is the lack of outside lights. Last year the CPF installed large floodlights around the complex to deter criminals. These lights, however, only operate when the streetlights are functioning, and they haven’t worked since March.

“We feel unsafe here at night. “They have broken in twice and even stole someone’s car,” said Nieman. Plumbing problems also persist, as some residents have blocked toilets. Comment has been requested from the City of Ekurhuleni and will be published once it has been received.
