Modderbee Management Area gets involved in the community

Small packets of dagga, heroin and packets of cigarettes, sharp objects and condoms were confiscated from school bags, corridors and the library.

Over the past three weeks, the Modderbee Management Area, EMPD, Department of Education, SAPS and Department of Community Safety have been working together to ensure learners go to school in a crime-free environment.

This initiative aims to improve public safety, reduce violence and any type of criminal activity in learning institutions and has been designed to support innovative approaches to deter crime and improve community safety.

So far, they have conducted searches at Nigel High School, Alra Park Secondary School, Vezukhono Secondary School, Caiphus Nyoka Secondary School, Davey Secondary school and Rivoni Secondary School.

The discovery of heroin and dagga, packaged in small packets, in most schools was found with the assistance of dogs from the EMPD K9 Unit.

Other schools still have to be searched after Covid-19 restrictions around physical contact have been relaxed.

Speaking to a local radio station last Friday, the acting area commissioner Makhetha Moipone said the correctional facilities are open for school tours to dispel the myth that prison is a five-star hotel.

“Learners see first-hand that there is lack of freedom, privacy and limited movements that can also lead to overcrowding.

“Rather share the remedies of rehabilitation whilst outside the perimeters of correctional facilities than when they are inside,” said Moipone.

Modderbee Management Area manager of special programmes Molokela Mabore said the safety of learners remains a key priority within society and it is their responsibility as law enforcement officials to protect the community from criminal activities that may occur under their watch.

“The department of correctional service is determined to break the cycle of crime.

“It is important for us to fulfil the purpose of the correctional system, which is to protect the public, promote social responsibility and enhance human development.

“This security cluster is determined to focus on the inculcation of values, ethics and restoration of just a caring society within schools and community,” said Mabore.
