The Dr WK du Plessis School in Geduld is going to be rebuilt from the ground up.
This comes after a large amount of asbestos was found to be in the buildings, which poses a health hazard to learners and staff.
School principal Cobus van Eeden has been applying for the school to be rebuilt for 18 years.
The main obstacle has been funding, however, Van Eeden was finally able to get approval and the project began in May this year.

The rebuilding will take place in three phases.
Phase one will involve the demolishing of the houses and preparing the area for a temporary school where learners will be taught while construction takes place.
Phase two, which is scheduled to happen in August, will involve moving learners to the temporary school.
Phase three will be the construction of the new hostel in December.
Van Eeden said he has full faith that the school’s teachers will quickly adapt to their new environment.

“It will be a big challenge for everyone but I know my staff and I know they are more than capable,” he said.
He said the children will be specially oriented to deal with a new form of school.
“The school will be a state-of-the-art school with better computers and improved safety. The project will also increase the school’s capacity with 300 learners,” said van Eeden.
The estimated cost of the project is R250-million.
