Refuse collection has reached a breaking point in Springs and the Rietfontein dumpsite is still closed.
As a result, refuse was dumped at the Daggafontein mini-dumpsite, which subsequently overflowed and then shut its gates after a protest over payment.
Residents have become frustrated and were told to dump their refuse in spots around Springs.

“Rietfontein landfill site is temporarily closed.
“The City of Ekurhuleni landfill sites are operated and maintained by the service providers on behalf of the City.
“The contract for the service provider operating the Rietfontein landfill site ended on December 31 and the application for the appointment of the new service provider was a non-award.
“The department is in the process of appointing service providers temporarily through Section 36,” said Nhlanhla Cebekhulu, divisional head of communications and media relations for the City of Ekurhuleni.
Despite this, the municipality stated it is doing all it can to ensure refuse is collected in Springs.

“Waste collection from door-to-door is done daily as scheduled, depending on availability of resources.
“Waste collection is hampered by mechanical breakdown on the existing fleet, which negatively affects the calendar day of removal.
“All means possible, for example hiring of collection vehicles, are undertaken to ensure that waste is removed per service point weekly,” he said.
Cebekhulu requested residents keep waste in their yards until collected by the municipal crew or transport and dispose of waste at the nearby approved landfill site.
