Seventy young and eager nursing students registered for a year-long specialisation healthcare course at the African Institute in Dersley on Thursday afternoon.
Classes will be offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays by highly trained tutors, with the students working at clinics during the rest of the week to rack up their practical hours.
These classes are made possible by the University of Pretoria and the Department of Health.
At this institute, the students will be equipped with new essential skills such as childcare, nutrition, disaster management, Covid and infection control, frail care, palliative care, Alzheimer’s and dementia care and basic anatomy and physiology.
The lecturers will also be helping the students improve their English and maths skills.
“I am very excited to get started here with these students and equip them with the skills they will need to be the best healthcare workers they can be.
“We are also very glad to see the number of students who showed up here today. It shows me how much they care,” said tutor and academic director of the African Institute Kinna Erasmus.
