Springs Photographic Club looking to grow

The club also hosts special outings to find the best locations for photography.

A passion for photography and sense of adventure sits at the heart of the Springs Photographic Club and it encourages residents of Springs to join it in its quest for the perfect shot.
Photographers of all skill levels are welcome to join the club and no fancy or expensive equipment is required.
Members of the club meet once a month at the St Michaels Presbyterian Church on Seventh Street in New Township at 19:15.
The primary objective of these meetings is for the photographers to present their best photos to a judge who will then provide feedback and points.
Points are given as bronze, silver or certificate of the month (COM) depending on the quality of the photo as well as a star rating.

The judges also give a short lecture and presentation of their photos before providing their critiques.
Photographers are also given the opportunity to enter a salon competition.
The salon provides the photographers with an even wider platform to present their photos to professional photographers and further improve their skills.
When photographers first join the club, they will automatically be given a one-star rating.
After they have been awarded a certain amount of points for their photos, they will move up to the next star rating.
The ratings go from one star to five-star masters.
Every month has a different subject for the photographers to go out and capture with the skills they have learned and tips received from the judges.
The club also hosts special outings to find the best locations for photography.
Deputy chairperson of the club Chris Rossouw said the club boosted his passion for photography and helped him improve his skills.
How did you first join the club?
I joined the club about 10 years ago when I received my first camera from my wife.
I wanted to make the best use of the camera and I looked around for clubs to join when I found the Springs club.
How has your experience with the club been?
It’s been amazing and really improved my skills.
Every club has its own dynamics but at the end of the day, it’s all about social integration and enjoying your hobby with other people.
And, of course, it’s a great opportunity to improve your skills.

How many members does the club have?
It’s still a relatively small club with about 13 or 14 members.
Covid-19 really dwindled our member size but people are welcome to join.
What are some of your fondest memories at the club so far?
I have many great memories, but the best is probably when I received my five-star rating.
I had to work very hard and improve myself every time and it was great to see it all pay off in such a meaningful way.
Is there anything you would like to say to people thinking of joining your club?
It’s really one of the best decisions you can make for your photography career.
There is so much you can learn from other photographers who are more experienced than you and they do want to help you.
It’s also a great opportunity to meet new people and form a community and make friends – that is really my favourite part of it all.
