SAPS operation curbs illegal mining

The operation took place last Friday in Everest, Gugulethu, Grootvlei and Marikana informal settlements.

Officers from the Springs SAPS with the assistance of the EMPD seized equipment used in illegal mining in Springs.

Law enforcement recovered pendukas, steel pots, picks, spades, steel balls and a cutting torch, among other things.

The operation took place last Friday in Everest, Gugulethu, Grootvlei and Marikana informal settlements.
“Illegal mining is a big problem in Springs, but we are working tirelessly to make it hard for these crimes to continue,” said Capt Johannes Ramphora, communications officer of the Springs SAPS.

One man was arrested during the operation and was charged with possession of stolen property.
This was after he was found with an aluminium cable believed to have been stolen in a separate incident.
The police encourage residents to report any suspicious events to their nearest police station.

Gas cylinders are among the equipment that police believe is used for illegal mining activities in Springs.
