Candles a symbol of new beginnings

The ceremony began with a rendition of the national anthem by the learners.

Buckingham Academy held a special red carpet ceremony on Saturday morning to welcome new learners.
The Strubenvale school pulled out all the stops to ensure the event was one to be remembered by all with a beautifully decorated hall.
Each new learner lit a candle and placed it on a table, which was soon decked with dozens of red and white candles.

Last year’s Grade Six learners welcomed the new learners with songs as they lit the candles.

“These candles are a symbol of their learning and a new chapter in their lives,” said principal Catherine Bauthier.
The ceremony began with a rendition of the national anthem by the learners.
They were then guided, hand in hand, by the school’s head boy and girl, Sinakho Motsepa and Carla Fourie, down the red carpet to light their own candle, with proud parents cheering them on.

Each teacher then introduced themselves to the parents, explaining what they will be teaching their children and how they will go about giving them the best education possible.
“Lord, may their year be filled with enrichment, with understanding, with concept formation and true understanding.
“May they experience every learner as a friend and every teacher as a role model, and may their year be healthy, happy and showered with your richest blessings,” prayed Bauthier.

Head boy Sinakho Motsepa was keen to help the new learners feel welcome and enjoy the ceremony.
