Water shortage in Selection Park

"I can't even do my job."

Residents in Selection Park have been facing a water crisis for two weeks and have received no answers from the municipality.
Sarel Vermaak, who lives in a house with five other family members, feels hopeless in this situation.
“I have to buy water just so we can wash our hands and clean ourselves. It takes a full jug just to flush the toilet once.”
Vermaak said the water comes back for only small periods, leaving the air in the pipes that cause damage when a tap is opened.

Cracks have formed in the walls of his house due to pipes shaking when a tap is turned on.
In addition, Vermaak owns a refuse removal company and has to clean his vehicles daily.
“I can’t even do my job. These vehicles smell awful and I can’t conduct my business like this, so I am losing a lot of money,” he said.

Vermaak has resorted to buying water for his family to drink and wash themselves.

Vermaak isn’t the only one affected by this. Many of his neighbours on Roxburgh Street face the same issue, including an apartment complex.
“The owner is losing a lot of money due to this,” said Vermaak.
Vermaak and his neighbours have contacted the metro numerous times.

“You get through, and then they put you on hold. I have waited an entire hour and still there was no answer. I don’t know who to go to anymore,” said a frustrated Vermaak.
Comment from the City of Ekurhuleni will be published once it has been received.
