Artist speaks about new album, NPO

“I understand they were just being protective not knowing the industry is also a career."

Singer and songwriter Nokuthula Fundama (46) have always been passionate about music.
The Springs resident, who was born and raised in Kwa-Thema, started singing at the age of 14.
She said her parents were against her having a career in the industry and instead wanted her to study.
“I respected my parent’s wishes and went to study computer systems at Vaal University. I then completed my studies and worked until 2015. I then decided to leave the field and pursue my dream,” said Fundama.
Fundama said nothing was fulfilling her throughout her life except music. She wanted to become an artist since she was a teenager.

“My parents were afraid of the industry’s lifestyle. They thought I will get carried away becoming a celebrity and not being myself.
“I understand they were just being protective not knowing the industry is also a career. Parents must stop ruling the decisions of their children but support them. In that way, they will not be led astray. They will know their purpose and never lose any direction especially in the industry,” she said.
Fundama told the Advertiser that it was never easy leaving her job to pursue her dream but that did not stop her.
“I planned how I was going to tackle and move in the industry but some of the things didn’t go as planned. I have a very supportive husband who always encourages me and that is why I never gave up,” she said.
Fundama recorded her debut album called Ngizoqina, which was released in 2015 and won the 2016 SABC Crown Gospel Award for Best Gospel Jazz song.

“I am also the founder of the Ndlondlobala Foundation, which is an NPO that aims at training children, both boys and girls, youth and young women to be citizens that can stand for themselves and make good decisions regarding their futures and livelihood,” she said.
Fundama is working on her current album titled Phakama which features songs such as Phakama and Izwe Lethu.
“On Izwe Lethu I featured my husband who is also passionate about music but not pursuing it. It is a very special song, people must check it out,” she said.
