Residents take matters in their hands

The community is happy with the outcome and will continue taking care of the area on their own.

Selcourt community members cleaned up an area opposite the corner of Tritan and Sabie roads in Selcourt on March 2.
Jan van Vreden said it was no use for them to report the matter to the council, as the municipality could not assist.

“We have tried to find the owners of the stands to ensure they take the responsibility to clean them, but still nothing has been done,” said van Vreden.
“There are three main threats that are rats, snakes, and criminals using it as a hiding place on these two open stands. It is overgrown, we even picked up snakes,” said van Vreden.
“There was also a robbery in the area not so long ago where criminals hid in the long grass.”

He said the community could not take it anymore and tried without success to track down to whom the stands belong.
“We took upon ourselves to clean the stands and it is going quite well. I believe this is a huge achievement for us because this place poses a danger. Myself and the community will do this out of our pockets and maybe the owners might come forward,” said van Vreden.
