Empty promises for Never-Never informal settlement
“The meeting intended to get information of when the people are going to be relocated since they made a promise,” said Simelani.
Ward councillor Thulani Simelane and representatives from the Department of Human Settlements held a meeting on March 9 at the Never-Never informal settlement regarding relocating the community to Brakpan’s old location.
It has been four years since the department promised the community they will be relocated.
Simelane said according to the department, the piece of the land on which the people are living is privately owned.
“The meeting intended to source information of when the people are going to be relocated since they made a promise,” said Simelane.

He said the other purpose of the meeting was to understand the reasons why the number of shacks is increasing and why there are certain delays.
“Some concerns that the community raised were that they felt undermined as they had requested metro officials to attend the meeting and only two attended,” he said.
“The metro has been promising to relocate the residents since 2008. Members of the community wanted to know why they didn’t relocate them after counting them in 2019. Now, the number of shacks has increased, which might delay them further.
“The community is hoping it will be given a date of a follow-up meeting when all the relevant department officials will be available before the end of March,” said Simelane.
