Thugs imitate police in bogus car recoveries
“The scammers claim the car has been found and tell the victim a certain amount has to be paid in order for them to get their car back."

The Springs SAPS is warning the public against bogus police targeting hijacking victims.
“We have noticed an increase in incidences where people who have reported their cars stolen receive calls from fake police officers.
“The scammers claim the car has been found and tell the victim a certain amount has to be paid in order for the car to be released,” explained Capt Johannes Ramphora of Springs SAPS.

Some victims have fallen into the trap and paid the amounts to the scammers.
“In the case of a car that has been reported as stolen is found, the police will never ask for money from the victim. The owner of the car would be contacted and told where the car is. The owner would then identify that the car is theirs,” he added.
Ramphora encouraged victims to contact the investigating officers assigned to their cases before making any transfers.
