The Pan African Shotokan Karate Federation hosted the Africa Women’s Cup Karate Championship at the Springs Civic Centre over the weekend.
Shihan Michael Cindi Mailula invited women to support the initiative in celebration of Women’s Month.
“I am happy with the outcome of the event. It was our first international tournament and I think we did a great job,” said Mailula.

Fifty karatekas from around the country put their skills on display at the event.
The youngest group were U8s and the men’s veterans’ category was the oldest group.
Mailula admits they had some challenges getting participants from other countries to the venue on time.

“Some karatekas got stuck at the airport, others did not even make it to South Africa. But this is how we learn and next year we will do better,” he added.
Mailula promised that the competition will now be an annual event, thanks to his sponsors Shabangu Ngwane Funeral Parlour.
In September the karate club will host a black belt grading.
“At the moment we only have two black belts and we are hoping to groom more,” he said.
The club will also participate in the Africa Championships in Gaborone, Botswana, in November.
“We still invite interested people to contact us and hopefully join the federation,” he added.
