Youth group joins SANBS for blood and toy drive

Residents are asked to donate teddy bears and books at the drive on Saturday.

The DA Youth Group in conjunction with the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) held a blood drive at Springs Mall on Saturday.

This was in line with the SANBS urging residents to donate blood to replenish low stocks across the country.

In a press statement released by the organisation, it confirmed that more blood is needed to save lives.

“We are experiencing a high demand for blood from hospitals across the country. The nation’s blood stocks are strained, necessitating our appeal for increased donations in aid of those who may need transfusions during this period,” said Thandi Mosupye, the SANBS senior manager of marketing, communication and brand.

The youth group was able to help the SANBS exceed their target of 34 pints of blood on the day. The group also ran a teddy bear and book drive for organisations close to their hearts.

“We plead with residents to kindly bring teddy bears that they no longer want or need. We will wash and fix them up to be as good as new for those who need them. We also ask that people donate books to us for a special initiative we are undertaking,” said councillor Charmaine Kock.

The group and the SANBS will be hosting another drive at the Strubenvale Pharmacy parking lot.
