Bhairavi Sungum of Springs celebrates Tamil New Year

The community is invited to enjoy all that is planned for the event when Bhairavi Sungum of Springs celebrates the Tamil New Year on April 15.

Tamil communities around the world mark their New Year on April 14.

To commemorate this auspicious occasion, the Bhairavi Sungum of Springs is again on the threshold of hosting its 30th Cultural Concert of songs, dance and music in Tamil celebrations of their heritage.


Ryan Chinnasamy (tabla) is one of the guests expected to perform at the celebration.

As there are seven days in a week and 12 months in a year, Poovershree Pillay, the chairperson of the Bhairavi Sungum of Springs, noted that the Tamil almanacs have a 60-year cycle.

Each year has a special name, and this year’s name is Sobakiruthu Varusham, which means ‘The Year of Auspiciousness and Bliss’.


Sylvester Mahendram Moodley (ghatam) is set to perform at the Tamil New Year celebration.

Bhairavi Sungum invites the community to celebrate the Tamil New Year on April 15 at the Bakerton Community Center.

The celebration will feature South Africa’s music maestros and the sensational vocalist Neville Sivanandan Moodley, with dance performances by the Sarvashiva Dance Academy.


Pooven Pillay will perform the violin at the Tamil New Year event.

Entry is free, and supper will be served.
