Learners of The Reef Swim School show off their skills during gala

The purpose of the gala is to showcase the progress of the children as they progress in their swimming careers.

The Reef Swim School in Casseldale held a swimming gala on Saturday.

The swimmers of the school showcased their talents and progress.

Kesea Baker, swimming coach and owner of the school, said she hosts this annual event mainly for the parents of her 170 learners.

“Parents aren’t usually present when the children are in lessons.

“We love to show the parents how far their children have progressed,” said Kesea.

She added children also received medals no matter what position they landed during the swims.

“It’s important to keep the children motivated so they continue to grow and learn,” she said.

Kesea has been a swimming instructor for 22 years and has owned her swimming school for 15 years.

She said it is important for children to learn about water safety and swimming because of the increased dangers around water.

“Each child deserves the opportunity to learn how to be around water.

“A child can drown in the bath or a bucket of water.

“We teach them lifesaving methods to prevent water-related injuries and deaths,” emphasised Kesea.

She adds swimming has overall health benefits for children.

“Swimming engages every muscle in the body. It is also very good for children with chronic illnesses such as bronchitis and asthma,” she said.

The swimming school works with children from as young as six months old.
