FERH pay homage to youth of ’76
The FERH youth desk hopes to see more young people use their services.
The Far East Rand Hospital (FERH) staff commemorated Youth Day with song and dance on June 15.
Wearing school uniforms, the staff remembered the youth of 1976 and celebrated the freedoms now enjoyed by all South Africans.
Dr Sonwabo Lindani, the FERH CEO, said the hospital boasted services specifically created for the youth.
“The youth is not even aware of the services we have for them. We know one of the main challenges SA faces is the high percentage of transmission of HIV.
“We have ARVs and condoms, and we encourage the youth to abstain from sex,” he said.
Lindani explained FERH’s youth desk is open until late in the evening to accommodate those unable to visit them during the day.

“We are committed to serving our people with a smile. The youth must never feel unwelcome. We have a programme for the termination of pregnancy.
“When patients come to us for medical services, they must find a warm environment,” he added.
He emphasised the need for education on sexual health.
“The youth needs to understand that there are many STDs. They must know how to protect themselves at all times.”
Lindani explained that the hospital offers mentorship programmes in various departments to fight youth unemployment.
“We celebrated the youth of the past while we equip the youth of today because they are the future of SA,” he concluded.
