Vallerie van Tonder shines bright during ladies ringball tournament
Ringball is a game that is similar to netball but has its own functions and rules.
Laerskool Morester’s sports co-ordinator Vallerie van Tonder represented Sedibeng Senior Ladies team as a defender in the National RSA Ringball Tournament.
The tournament took place in Pretoria from July 3 to 8.
The 24-year-old, who lives in Delmas, became interested in the sport when her mom’s friend introduced it to her.
“My mom’s friend, Christa Greyvenstein, introduced me to the sport and with support from my mom, my love and passion for ringball grew,” she said.

Recalling what attracted her to the sport, Vallerie mentioned how she loves the fast pace feel of the game.
Vallerie started playing ringball in 2013 when she was just 14 years old with the Ekurhuleni East School for Ringball.
She has since gone to compete in various competitions over the years which include the Warriors Super 9 League.
“I left Ekurhuleni and transferred to Sedibeng in January and started playing for the Goudrif Club. I played for the Warriors Super 9 League and we also went to club champs this year,” she adds.

When asked how she finds time to practise, she mentioned her role as a sports coordinator being very beneficial for someone passionate about playing sports.
“After our normal sports days at school that include hockey and netball, we travel to Sasolburg and Vereeniging twice a week for practice. Other than that, I practice and gym regularly at home,” she said.
As a lover of photography, Vallerie likes to take action photos when she is not in on the action herself.
“I also love to spend time with my horses and the other animals on our farm in my spare time,” she said.

Vallerie mentioned that the sport has enough clubs and is represented well but feels that Springs and Brakpan clubs need more supporters and players.
Ansie, who Vallerie refers to as her biggest supporter, has voiced her undying pride for her daughter.
“I feel very proud as she has worked hard for this. She was only 19 years old when she attained her national colours,” beamed Ansie.

Vallerie is just as proud of her mom as she lauds her for raising her well despite being a single mother.
“She has always supported me and has never missed a single practice or any of my games. She inspires me the most as she also used to play when she was in school,” said Vallerie.
Vallerie has been selected as a player in the Ringball South Africa senior ladies invitation team.
