CoE: report leaks to save water

In the past few weeks, the Advertiser uncovered three major water leaks in the CBD alone within a kilometre radius.

Water leaks might be one of the main reasons reservoirs are running dry in the CoE, and the leaks continue to plague the city.

In the last few weeks, the Advertiser uncovered three major water leaks in the CBD alone within a kilometre radius.

In such cases, the metro said it relies heavily on its teams to spot the leaks and the public to bring them to their attention.

“We appeal to the public to report more of these as and when they are spotted so we can deal with the issue. Water is a scarce resource in the country, and we all have a responsibility to protect and preserve it,” said Zweli Dlamini, the metro spokesperson.

He said water services officials are expected to attend to water leaks when they spot them. Dlamini explained water leaks do not affect the reservoirs because reservoirs receive water from Rand Water, and the city then distributes it to the end users (residents and businesses).

“However, the leaks cause a problem in the form of lost revenue for the municipality. If the leak is on private property, unfortunately, the owner must pay for the lost water,” he added.

Homeowners have the responsibility to fix leaks on their properties. They can report leaks outside their properties to the call centre on 0860 54 3000.
