Springs Girls’ High learner flies high

The Grade 11 learner will embark on a youth exchange programme and spend a month in Germany.

Sibongakonke Gumede (17) will represent her school and Springs in Germany. The Grade 11 Springs Girls’ High School learner was selected to participate in the Friends of South Africa (FSA) Youth Exchange Programme.

The FSA is an organisation based in Gauteng and the Western Cape that specialises in offering learners the experience of learning abroad.

The Dunnottar teenager, affectionately known as Bobo, says she saw a flyer for the programme in one of her classes and decided to apply.

With the help of her teacher, Caitlin Steyn, and her loved ones, she completed all the necessary assignments and placed 11th in the province for her results through FSA.

Her mother, Frida Skosana, says they are nervous because Bobo will embark on this journey by herself.

“We feel nervous because Bobo will embark on her own on parts of the journey. For example, the train rides, but she is a confident and strong-willed young lady. We are happy for her and look forward to all the gifts,” says her mother.

Bobo says she is excited for the journey and grateful for the opportunity.

“I am going with an open mind and a teachable spirit,” she says.

She says she wants to learn many things while in Germany.

“I hope to learn more about their cuisine, culture, languages and history. I look forward to learning the values and traditions they hold dear to their hearts and how their cultures differ from ours,” she declares.

Bobo says she looks forward to spending a month in Schleswig-Holstein because she has been placed with a host family looking forward to meeting her.

“We wish her a safe trip filled with smooth travels, delightful discoveries, and the joy of new experiences,” says Steyn.

Bobo will travel to Germany on December 14.
