SAPS says teenagers are more susceptible to bullying

The SAPS say bullying is a rising issue, especially for teenagers.

The Springs SAPS condemns bullying in schools and local communities. This is after a video on social media has been circulating of a teenager in Geduld allegedly being assaulted by older boys.

Springs Advertiser reached out to the parents. The emotional mother said her 14-year-old son had been bullied since they arrived here from Cape Town.

“We haven’t been here a year and already regret moving to Springs.”

The boys allegedly accosted the teenager on his way to buy a cold drink. According to his mother, he was accused of slandering a female when they confronted him, an allegation he denied.

“They started getting aggressive. He ran to the local tuck shop because he knew it had cameras.“

The footage shows an altercation between the boys.

“When he got home, we immediately asked him what happened, and he explained it to us. We did not waste time and opened a case at the police station.”

The family says they are afraid of leaving their home for fear of victimisation.

“This situation scares me as bullying could lead to some children committing suicide. I fear for my son’s mental and emotional wellbeing.”

The teenager also said he was worried about his family’s safety during this time.

The mother of the female at the centre of the situation was asked to give her side of the story and she answered, “Sorry, it is now a police matter.”

Springs SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Themba Tshabalala says bullying is a serious problem, especially among teenagers.

“It always starts small, but over time, it escalates.”

Tshabalala says children should always tell their parents when they witness or experience bullying.

“Parents must involve the police. We are available to help the community 24/7.”

He adds that just a mere unwelcome touch is classified as assault and considered as a serious offence.

“We have an office that deals with cases of GBV and victim empowerment for such sensitive cases. Our Social

Crimes Prevention Unit is also fighting bullying in schools and sharing safety tips. With the help of the community, we can overcome this.”
