It’s all in the love of the game

Springs is never short on talent and Danielle Chapman is proof of that.

Danielle Chapman is Springs’ tennis wonder. The hard work has finally paid off for the 17-year-old who is number one in the South African junior division.

“I am ranked 160 internationally with the aim of improving my rankings by competing in more American and European tournaments.”

The Springsite is the proud holder of seven international titles.

“I started playing when I was seven and I remember telling my parents I wanted to participate in tournaments.”

Danielle is homeschooled. This allows her mom, Zahn, to manage her training and education.

“I play tennis in the morning, followed by school and I end off the day with more training.”

The teenager admits that she is determined to play professionally and lauds the support she receives not only from her parents but from everyone around her.

“I have a wonderful team, which includes a coach, a nutritionist and a personal trainer whose roles are to help me become the best I can be and to excel.”

She speaks highly of the support she receives from her mom who ensures she follows the strict regimen set for her.

“Tennis is an expensive sport so I am grateful for the financial support I am getting. My mom also prepares my meals and takes me to practice and tournaments and makes sure my coach is present.”

Danielle says she is the best because of the support she receives.

When asked how she stays motivated, Danielle says she has the drive to succeed. Danielle has competed in various countries including England, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Morocco, Dubai and America.

She also joined a tennis academy in 2023 to gain more exposure to more players.

“Being part of the academy has allowed for the opening of opportunities to play with more professionals.”

Danielle says her greatest moment as a tennis player was watching one of her favourite players live in action.

“I watched Rafael Nadal on the centre court. It was such a magical moment as it was an experience that surpassed watching him on TV.”

She also beamed when she mentioned seeing Serena Williams playing live. Danielle adds that she does not look up to any player in particular but strives to learn from players.

When asked what she would say to aspiring tennis players, she says it is not just about motivation.

“Aspiring tennis players should have a sense of competitiveness from a young age. It will help them get through the ups and downs of the sport.

“I hold onto the love of the game. This is why I play socially to remind myself why I started playing tennis.”
