Race back in time with the Midvaal Historic Car Club

The Midvaal Historic Car Club embodies the timeless allure of vintage cars while nurturing a community bound by a shared passion and camaraderie.

Established in 2013, the Midvaal Historic Car Club (MHCC) revs up the engines of nostalgia and camaraderie for car enthusiasts.

Founded to provide a sanctuary free from political entanglements, MHCC has blossomed into a thriving community under chairperson Wentzel Nortman.

He says the club prides itself on being family-orientated and has grown from just four cars when they first started to over 30 vintage automobiles before the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Despite the pandemic’s adverse effects, MHCC remains steadfast with membership hovering between 15 and 20 cars.”

Reflecting on the pandemic’s impact, Nortman acknowledged the need to downsize events due to financial constraints.

“MHCC, once a monthly competitor, now graces the tracks every second month. However, this setback hasn’t dampened our spirits because we plan to bolster membership and restore regular competitions.”

Central to MHCC’s ethos is the celebration of automotive history, particularly for vehicles before December 1980, affectionately termed the pre-1980 series.

“We usually go for cars built before 1980, and that’s our tradition. We prefer affordable and accessible models, with a penchant for iconic brands – Ford Escort Mk 1 and Mk2, Ford Capri, Toyota Corolla/Celica/Corona, Datsun 1200 GX, Alfa Romeo, and Fiat. These car models are from 1968 to 1979.”

The MHCC extends its outreach beyond racing circuits, hosting events like Car in a Park, a benevolent showcase where enthusiasts converge to admire classic cars.

“Notably, proceeds from these events are channelled to charitable causes, epitomising our ethos of giving back to the community,” said Nortman.

Looking ahead, Nortman said the MHCC members eagerly anticipate an upcoming event in Mozambique as an opportunity to exhibit their cherished historic cars and engage with fellow enthusiasts.

Engagement with the local community remains paramount for MHCC.

“This engagement is facilitated through robust social media outreach on platforms like Facebook. We are committed to fostering appreciation for historic cars, ensuring their enduring relevance in the modern era,” said Nortman.

Nevertheless, MHCC faces its share of challenges, notably the exorbitant costs of procuring vintage car parts.
Regarding this, Nortman said the club is actively seeking sponsors to alleviate financial burdens, ensuring the sustainability of their endeavours.

He said the MHCC’s legacy is intertwined with illustrious figures like Willy Hepburn.

“He is a revered racing driver whose contributions to motorsport are immortalised in the annals of the club’s history. Willie’s legacy is a poignant reminder of our enduring spirit and the profound impact of passionate individuals.”
